Mumbai University Exam Cancellation: Education Minister writes to UGC asking to cancel final year exams

Education Minister of Maharashtra has asked UGC to cancel Mumbai University's final year examinations for this year. The examination was scheduled to be conducted from July 1 to 30, 2020.

Mumbai University's final year examinations may get canceled for the year. Education Minister of the state, Uday Samant has asked UGC to cancel the examination for final year students this year and promote the students for both UG/PG course without examination. This year around 8 to 10 lakh students from across Maharashtra would appear for the examination.

Uday Samant, Higher and Technical Education Minister has written a letter to the Chairman of University Grant Commission, UGC asking for the cancellation of the examination and grade the students as per UGC guidelines.

The letter read, “In view of COVID19 pandemic situation in Maharashtra and considering the feasibility of conducting the exams of approximately 8 to 10 lakh students from all across Maharashtra and India by maintaining all safety protocols seems very challenging and may endanger the safety and health of the students. Hence I am of the opinion that the terminal (final) examinations should not be conducted this year.”

A few days back, in the meeting attended by the minister and the Vice-Chancellors of various universities, it was decided that only final year students of Mumbai University would be appearing for the examination and rest students would not have to appear for the exams. The other students would be granted promotion based on internal assessments. Since then final year students have been protesting against this decision. An online petition was signed by students where they demanded cancellation of final year exams like other exams. After that Maharashtra Students' Union, MASU has written a letter to CM Uddhav Thackeray and Uday Samant, Higher and Technical Education Minister asking for the cancellation of the final year examination. The decision is yet to be taken by UGC on the cancellation of the examination. The examination was scheduled to commence from July 1 to July 30, 2020, in the state.
